Integrated Women's Health: Holistic Approaches for Comprehensive Care
By Ellen Frances Olshansky, Ellen Olshansky,Integrated Women's Health: Holistic Approaches for Comprehensive Care Ellen Olshansky 2000, 436 pp $48.95 paperback
As this book points out, women historically have been considered the first line of defense in health care--the dispensers of adhesive bandages and hugs. In their own way, women have always used integrated forms of health care. This book presents an excellent overview of many complementary forms of health care available specifically to women. Twelve forms of holistic treatment are presented as representative of a growing number of techniques that complement traditional medicine and generally promote a healthier lifestyle and enhance wellness. Some of the therapies discussed include acupuncture and acupressure, drama and dance, herbal remedies, homeopathy, music, biofeedback, and therapeutic touch.
Each chapter includes the history of a practice, a definition, a description, and research about the technique. The conditions that the treatment is best suited to alleviate are presented individually. At the end of each chapter, there is a summary of patient education and an area where the author lists her questions and concerns. An extensive bibliography relevant to each modality enables readers to continue their study of any treatment discussed.
The author does not neglect traditional medical practice and provides insight into treatments (eg, pharmacological, psychological, nutritional) with which most people are familiar. Her summaries are extremely well written, comprehensive, and factual.
I highly recommend this book. It is informative and presents the facts needed by anyone, whether a health care professional or layperson, to make decisions regarding integrative medical treatments. The information is nonjudgmental, and the writing style is easy to read and understand.
